Obituary for Albert "Al" J. Hagg

Albert J. Hagg passed away at the age of 87 on May 15, 2023, at Wynwood Assisted Living in State College, while surrounded by his family. Al was married to Ann Heberling Hagg for over 50 years, who preceded him in death in 2011.

Al was a talented athlete in his early years in Tyrone in Football, wrestling and baseball. He attended Notre Dame and Saint Vincent College. He was a career educator at Bald Eagle Area, Penns Valley, and Bald Eagle Nittany. He also coached football at Bald Eagle Area in the 1960s. He helped coach the 1963 team which he contended was BEA’s best-ever. His sons, who played on the 1976 team, had to correct him on numerous occasions.

He is survived by sons, Colonel (r) David Hagg and wife Susan of Mechanicsburg, Larry Hagg and wife Carolyn of Hollidaysburg, Ron Hagg and wife Bobbie of the RV lifestyle, and daughter, Marianne Roberts and husband Caleb of Julian, and his friend, Norma Miller, of Lamar. Also surviving are nine grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

Al loved to hunt at his beloved JABO camp with his sons and best friend, Joe Humphries. He also worked and golfed at Toftrees for 20 years. Al was a devoted Notre Dame football fan whose fandom could border on extreme. Al once broke his hand during the Notre Dame-Alabama game in 1973 while disagreeing with a play call.

A funeral mass will be held on Tuesday, May 30, 2023, at 11:00 AM, at Saint John the Evangelist Catholic Church, with Father Brian Saylor officiating. Graveside services will immediately follow at Schencks Cemetery in Howard. Arrangements are under the direction of Wetzler Funeral Service, Inc. in Bellefonte.

A Celebration of Life will be held at the Bellefonte Elks Lodge #1094, 120 W. High Street, Bellefonte, on Tuesday, May 30, 2023, from 3:00 until 7:00 PM.

The family would like to thank the wonderful staff at Wynwood House, especially Frannie, Ashley, Jessie, and Michelle, who provided their dad with such compassion and care. They would also like to thank the staff at Mount Nittany Medical Center, who provided excellent care during his difficult last days.
