Obituary for Dorothy M. Anderson

Dorothy M. Anderson, 83, of Pleasant Gap, PA, died peacefully at daybreak on Tuesday, December 8, 2020. She was at The Oaks at Pleasant Gap under hospice care.

Born February 28, 1937 in Patoka, IL to Cecil and Viola Jett, she was one of ten children. After high school, she moved to St. Louis, MO for secretarial training. Settling in Hoffman Estates, IL in 1968 with her husband, she raised two daughters and then returned to the work force, eventually retiring from the ELCA Churchwide office in Chicago. While her children were young, she treasured being a stay-at-home mother.

Dorothy remained in the Chicago area for several years after her retirement, when she relocated to a cottage at The Oaks to be close to her daughter, Alicia, because it is way too cold and snowy in Minnesota near her daughter, Sherice.

Throughout her life, Dorothy enjoyed sewing clothing and quilts, cooking and baking for family, writing letters, volunteering at church, and faithfully following current events. She loved ice cream, butterflies, and recording TV programs on VHS to watch them later. She was very proud of the ways her children and grandchildren are resourceful, independent, and caring. She was a shining example of these characteristics.

Dorothy was welcoming and caring, generous and thoughtful, innovative and creative. She was a good listener, enjoyed people and was content with her own company. She was quietly funny and always willing to give or to ask for help. She enjoyed exploring the areas where she lived, both in Chicagoland and central Pennsylvania, and would make time for birthday parties, choir concerts, school plays, and recitals.

Dorothy is survived by her daughters, Sherice Hamburger (David) and Alicia Anderson (Bob Skelly); grandchildren, Tina (Corey), Jessa (Luke), Chad, and Mara; great grandchildren, Hayley, Johnathan, and Brittany; brother Beryl Jett (Helen); and former husband, Carl Anderson of Schaumburg, IL.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date. Arrangements are under the direction of Wetzler Funeral Service, Inc. in Bellefonte.
