Obituary for Eileen J. Young

Eileen J. Young, 62, of Julian, passed away on Tuesday, May 23, 2023, at Mount Nittany Medical Center in State College. Born on August 12, 1960, in Bellefonte, she was the daughter of the late David and Delores (Hall) Smoyer. On October 29, 2004, in Runville, she married the love of her life, Jerry Lynn Young, who survives her at home after sharing over 18 years of marriage together.

Eileen was a 1978 graduate of Bald Eagle Area High School. She worked in the Accounts Payable department for Penn State until her retirement in 2020.

In addition to her husband, Jerry, she is survived by her two daughters, Heather Harter (Shawn) of Lock Haven, Angela Bailey of Virginia Beach, and six grandchildren: Madyson Barker, Dakota Barker, Eban Harter, Damon Harter, Xavier Bailey, and Johnathen Bailey, and her three beloved chihuahuas. Also surviving are her siblings: Michael Smoyer (Deb) of Unionville, Don Knepp (Tim) of Middleburg, David Smoyer of Ephrata, and Nancy Witmer (Brian) of State College, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Eileen enjoyed riding their four wheelers and side by sides, especially when they would go to West Virginia. She always looked forward to traveling with Jerry, going wherever the road may take them. She loved to cook and bake, especially her famous cookies. She made a point to pass them along to her family and friends, even sending them to the United Kingdom when one of her daughters lived there. Often, she would be accompanied by her grandkids in the kitchen where she shared her love of baking with them. For birthdays, she’d always find out what kind of cookie they would want and make a huge cookie cake to celebrate. Eileen loved sunflowers, hummingbirds, windchimes, and her gnomes, which beautifully adorned her home. She enjoyed tending to her flowers and watching the hummingbirds at her feeders. Additionally, she was not often caught without her three chihuahuas, Winston, Sadie, and Dexter, by her side. Dexter specifically never ventured too far away from her!

A selfless woman with her strong faith in God, Eileen was always putting other people ahead of herself. She was quite well known for responding to people who were asking about her with “I’m working on it…but for now, can I get you anything?” A loving wife, devoted mother, and loyal friend, she played many roles throughout her life, but her favorite title would have easily been Gramma Ween to her precious grandchildren. She leaves behind a void that they will now fill with the countless happy memories that have been made over the years.

Family and friends will be received on Wednesday, May 31, 2023, from 10-11:00 AM, at Wetzler Funeral Service, Inc., 206 N. Spring Street, Bellefonte. Funeral services will begin at 11:00 AM, at the funeral home, with Paster Bob Maurer officiating. The graveside service will immediately follow at Romola Christian Cemetery in Howard.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Eileen’s name to Fresenius Kidney Care of State College, 3901 S. Atherton Street, Suite 7, State College, PA 16801.
