Obituary for Ernest R. Young

Ernest “Ernie” R. Young, 94, of Runville, passed away at the home of his granddaughter on Thursday, January 19, 2023. Born on January 23, 1928, in Marsh Creek, he was the son of the late Blair Young, Sr. and Pearl (Weaver) Young. In July 1949, he married the love of his life, Shirley E. (Shultz) Young, who preceded him in death on October 11, 2022, after sharing over 73 years of marriage together.
Ernie attended Quay School. He proudly served his country in the United States Army during World War II, from April 1946 until he was honorably discharged in September 1947. During his time in the service, he was a driver of heavy trucks and awarded the World War II Victory Medal. After his time in the Army, he worked as an extrusion press operator for Cerro for over 40 years until his retirement.
He is survived by his two children, Kathy Culp (Bill) of Milesburg, and Jerry Young (Eileen) of Unionville. Also surviving are his five grandchildren, Jackie Roberts, Terri Klinefelter (Scott), Troy Craig (Kimberly), Heather Harter (Shawn), and Angela Bailey, 10 great grandchildren, Caleb Roberts, Blake Roberts, Grant King, Wyatt Klinefelter, Madyson Barker, Dakota Barker, Eban Harter, Damon Harter, Xavier Bailey, and Johnathen Bailey, a sister, JoAnne Peace (Robert) of Howard, and sister-in-law, Mary Young.
In addition to his wife, Shirley, and parents, he was predeceased by a sister, Marjorie Houdeshell, Phyllis Lucas, and a brother, Blair Young, Jr.
Ernie was a member of the Romola Bible Church in Howard. He loved being outdoors, especially when he was hunting and fishing. His gift of storytelling will be sorely missed by all. He will be fondly remembered for all the passion and dedication that he would put into his garden each year.
There will be a public viewing held on Thursday, January 26, 2023, from 10 A.M. until noon, at Wetzler Funeral Service, Inc., 206 N. Spring Street, Bellefonte. Funeral services will begin at noon, at the funeral home, with Pastor Bill Livermore and Pastor Bob Maurer officiating. Burial with full military honors will immediately follow at Romola Christian Cemetery in Howard.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in memory of Ernie to Romola Bible Church, 2280 Marsh Creek Road, Howard, PA 16841.
