Obituary for Flora S. Brooks

Flora S. Brooks, 96, of Bellefonte, passed away on March 23, 2022, at Centre Care. She was born on June 23, 1925, in Montandon, PA, to the late Rev. Harry C. and Mildred (Mason) Stenger.

Flora was a 1943 graduate of Bellefonte High School and a 1944 graduate of Dickinson (now Lycoming) College, earning a Stenographic degree. At Dickinson she was a member of the Dramatic Club, member of the Dart Staff, and the assistant editor of The Campus Office-R.

Following graduation from Lycoming, she went to work as a legal secretary for Judge Fleming, Judge William Litke and at the law firm of Fleming and Litke until she retired. She was one of the first licensed notary public in Pennsylvania for 55 years.

She was an active and life member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Bellefonte. She served as chairman of the Pastor-Parish Relations, Trustees and Finance Committees and the Administrative Board. She also directed the children’s choir, sang in the adult choir, was a pianist, and taught Sunday School for many years.

She was one of the first members of the Council of Churches of Bellefonte and Vicinity. Over the years she remained active serving several times as President, Vice President, and most recently, Secretary.

She was very active in the United Methodist Women at the local, district, and conference levels where she served as President, Vice President, Secretary, and Treasurer for several terms.

She was active in the Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP), where she volunteered and served on the board.

She is survived by two sons, Raymond N. Brooks, III, and his wife, Donna, of Bellefonte, and Harry Brooks, and his wife, Debra, of Bellefonte; and one sister, Barbara Mingle, of Havertown, one brother, George, of Akron, Ohio; five grandchildren, Renee Besecker, and her husband, Andy, Raymond Brooks, IV, Jennifer Petrusa, David Brooks, and his wife, Leslie, and Michael Brooks, and his wife, Alicia, and six great grandchildren, Raymond V “Nathan”, Hallie, Annabel, Adeline, Adriana, and Ayden Brooks.

Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by one sister, Ada Adamski, and three brothers, Harry, Jr., Wilbur, and Herman Stenger.

A public viewing will be held on Wednesday, March 30, 2022, from 9-11 A.M., at Wetzler Funeral Service, Inc., 206 N. Spring Street, Bellefonte. Funeral services will begin at 11 A.M, at the funeral home, with Rev. Peter Beddia officiating. Burial will immediately follow at Centre County Memorial Park, in College Township.

The family would like to express their appreciation to the staff at Centre Care for their compassionate care to Mom since 2018. Your kindness did not go unseen and was greatly appreciated.
