Obituary for Franklin "Frank" E. Hillard

Franklin “Frank” E. Hillard, 98, of Pleasant Gap, passed away on Saturday, January 16, 2021, at Juniper Village at Brookline in State College. Frank was born on August 19, 1922, in Bellefonte, the son of the late Herbert S. Lanette I. (Smith) Hillard. On June 26, 1948, he married his beloved wife, Evabelle (Hazel) Hillard, who preceded him in death on August 8, 2011, after sharing over 63 years of marriage together.

Frank was a 1940 graduate of Bellefonte High School and then attended the University of Utah in Basic Engineering. After school, he served in the United States Army from 1942 until 1946, during World War II, serving some of the time in France, in the European Theatre with the 13th Armored Division. During his time in the service, before being honorably discharged, he was awarded the Good Conduct Medal, American Campaign Medal, European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with two Bronze Stars, and the World War II Victory Medal. Over the years, he held various sales, customer relations, and administrative positions at M.W. Clasters, Titan Metal and Manufacturing, and Cerro Copper and Brass, until his retirement in 1987.

Frank is survived by one grandson, Jason Young, of Marysville, PA.

In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Susan Kay Young, on December 27, 2018, and his maternal grandparents, with whom he lived and was raised by, Frank V. and Barbara Ellen (Rote) Smith. He was also preceded in death by his 11 siblings, Herbert S. Hillard, Garth W. Hillard, Glenn E. Hillard, Gale M. Hillard, Barbara L. Rockey, Geraldine E. Porter, Beverly J. Breadon, Wanda K. Hillard, Linda D. Wilkins, Sharon E. Moyer, and Dale D. Walk; he was the last of his generation.

Frank was a member of the Faith United Methodist Church in Bellefonte. He was also a member of the Bellefonte Elks Club. Frank was a consummate and dedicated fisherman, who enjoyed fly fishing and bowling into his 90s in the senior league at Bellefonte Lanes.

Funeral services and burial will be private at the convenience of the family. Arrangements are under the direction of Wetzler Funeral Service, Inc. in Bellefonte.
