Obituary for James "Jim" A. Sherry

James “Jim” A. Sherry, 86, of Julian, passed away on Wednesday, December 21, 2022, at Centre Care in Bellefonte. Born on February 9, 1936, in Milesburg, he was the son of the late Dewey and Emma (Woomer) Sherry. On August 30, 1981, he married his beloved wife, Dorothy A. Jim was a 1954 graduate of Bellefonte High School. He proudly served his country in the United States Army National Guard. He worked for Bethlehem Steel in Buffalo, New York before taking a position as a Maintenance Supervisor with Corning Glass Works. He continued his career with Corning Glass for 30 years until his retirement in 1995.

In addition to his wife, Dorothy, he is survived by his three children, Timothy Sherry of Julian, Catherine Smith of Centre Hall, Linda Algeria (Steve) of Mill Creek, and his stepdaughter, Laura Stanisch (Max) of Kane, PA, 11 grandchildren: Sarah Sherry (Oakes) of State College, Lynn Kincaid (Lavon) of Pittsburgh, Jamie Smith (Clay) of Pleasant Gap, Tina Hall (Travis) of Snow Shoe, Jason Sherry (Samantha) of Julian, Erik Burger of Niskayuna, New York, Elizabeth Burger (Tim) of New York, New York, Emily Burger of Centennial, Colorado, Maddie Stanisch of Kane, Marcie Stanisch of Erie, and Moira Stanisch of Kane, and 10 great grandchildren.

Along with his parents, he was predeceased by a brother, Charles, and three sisters, Florence, Evelyn, and Marion.

Jim was a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Bellefonte, where he served as a longtime member of the property committee. He grew up around his Dad’s welding shop, where he learned the trade. As a skilled welder and mechanic with a caring heart, he would always lend a hand to family and friends with repair projects. If there was a problem to be solved, he had a solution. Jim was also an avid country music fan and could often be found playing his guitar in several bands over the years, most notably Country Fever.
