Obituary for John W. Dann Sr.

John W. Dann, Sr., 84, of Bellefonte, passed away at home surrounded by loved ones on Monday, November 13, 2023. Born on October 3, 1939, in Bellefonte, he was the son of the late Calvin A. and Helen M. (Sweitzer) Dann. He was married to his beloved wife, Carol (McNeal) Dann, who preceded him in death on September 4, 1999, after sharing 25 years of marriage together. He was remarried to Linda D. (Boal) Dann, on October 11, 2004, who survives him at home.

John and Carol purchased the Hotel Do-De in 1974, where he remained the owner/operator until a devastating fire claimed the hotel/bar in 2012, which led him into his retirement. John looked forward to his daily interactions with the bar patrons and the many men and women who lived in the hotel above. It was important to him that his tenants were taken care of during the holidays and would provide a large holiday feast with all the fixings. All that knew him would agree that he was an amazing cook.

In addition to his wife, Linda, and first wife Judy (Burris) Miller, he is survived by his children, Nancy Baldwin (Denny) of Bellefonte, John Dann, Jr. (Dayna) of Bellefonte, Danna Smith (Todd) of Bellefonte, Rona Richner (Greg) of Bellefonte, and Bryan Dann (Bobbi) of Bellefonte. He is also survived by his stepchildren, Vicki Jordan of Annapolis, MD, Donna Jordan of Bellefonte, Tracy Meixel of Bellefonte, and Renae Eckley of Bellefonte, 21 grandchildren: Lindsey, Leah, Andy, Danielle, Casey, Scott, Amber, Ryan, Jarrett, Abby, Desiree, Amber, Amanda, Zach, Ryleigh, Brittany, Storm, Cody, Dylan, Blair, Quinn and a numerous great grandchildren. Also surviving are two sisters, Ethel Meredith of State College, and Nannie Lentz of Litchfield Park, AZ.

In addition to his second wife, Carol, and parents, he was predeceased by a stepson, Joe Jordan, and by his siblings, Calvin A. Dann, Emma Schweiker, Grace Burris, Marlene Struble, William Dann, Paul Dann, Mary Dann, and Donald Dann.

John was a life member of the Undine Fire Company and Elks Lodge Post #1094 in Bellefonte. Additionally, he was a member of the Pleasant Gap American Legion Post #867, Bellefonte Moose Lodge #206, and Veterans Club of Bellefonte Post #1600.

In his hey-day, John loved to race sprint cars and was a regular at Port Royal, Williams Grove, and Selinsgrove Speedways. This eventually led him to his passion for Nascar as an avid fan and traveling in a motor home to visit all the different Nascar tracks. You could always find John in one of the local clubs playing pool, shooting darts, and shooting the shit.

A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. Details will be announced by the family closer to the time of the celebration. Arrangements are under the direction of Wetzler Funeral Service, Inc. in Bellefonte.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in memory of John to the Food Bank at the Faith Centre at 131 S. Allegheny Street, Bellefonte, PA 16823.
