Obituary for John Lester Strouse

John Lester Strouse, 88, of State College, PA, passed away at Harmony of State College on Friday, March 29, 2024. Born on March 27, 1936, in Spring Mills, PA of the late John Henry and Mildred Malena (Bletz) Strouse. On June 8, 1956, at Green Grove Church in Spring Mills, he married his beloved wife of 67 years, Florence Virginia (Walker) Strouse, who preceded him in death on December 10, 2023. They began their life in Pleasant Gap (in the Village of Peru) and later residing in Bellefonte for four and a half decades until moving to a personal care facility in State College in 2020.

John spent his entire 36-year career at the Bellefonte PA Fish and Boat Commission, starting as a Fish Culturist and later promoted to Maintenance Repairman. He remained in that position until his retirement in 1996.

In his leisure time, he enjoyed hunting, working with autos, woodworking, flea markets, shopping, bus trips, gardening, and spending time with family.

He is survived by one son, Gerald Strouse (Denise), one daughter, Cindy Bierly (Jonathan), two grandchildren, Alicia Boyer (Brandon), and Mark Bierly (Fiancée Trinity Witmer), two great-granddaughters, Addison and Autumn Boyer; two brothers, Rick (Becky) and Samuel Strouse; two sisters-in-law, Shirley Walker and Edna Strouse; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his wife, John was preceded in death by two brothers, Walter and Frank Strouse, and one sister, Ruby Long.

Family and friends are invited to attend a memorial service and celebration of life for both John and Florence on Friday, April 5 at 11:00 a.m. at St. John’s Union Church, 296 Ridge Road, Spring Mills (Farmer’s Mills), PA followed by burial at Centre County Memorial Park, 1032 Benner Pike, State College, PA. Arrangements are under the direction of Wetzler Funeral Service, Inc. in Bellefonte.
