Obituary for Leonard "Woody" P. Weaver Sr.

Leonard “Woody” P. Weaver, Sr., 84, of Bellefonte, passed away on Thursday, October 20, 2022, at Centre Care in Bellefonte. Born on January 24, 1938, in Elmira, New York, he was the son of the late Joseph E. and Marion (Church) Weaver. On February 15, 1957, in Jacksonville, Florida, he married his high school sweetheart and love of his life, Shirley (Hurr) Weaver, who survives him at home after sharing over 65 years of marriage together.

Woody was a 1955 graduate of Jersey Shore High School. After high school, he proudly served his country by enlisting in the United States Marine Corps. He served from 1956 until he was honorably discharged in 1960. During that time, he was in the USMC Air Wing and stationed at numerous Naval Air Stations in the United States and Okinawa Japan. After his military service, he attended Lycoming College, where he graduated in 1963.

He worked in numerous industrial settings, including Corning Glassworks, Continental Can, and Warner Lime Company, as a shift supervisor/foreman and Purchasing agent. In 1986, after Warner Company downsized and shut down the Bellefonte mine, Leonard gave up inside work and started his own business, “L.P. Weaver Lawnscape.” He worked his small landscaping business in Centre County up until he retired in 2020 at 81 years old. He was proud of his work ethic, never taking a day off and often working 12-hour days, albeit a few of those hours could have been spent conversing with customers and neighbors. Affectionately referred to as “Woody” by his family and close friends, truly enjoyed working hard and his attention to the smallest details went a long way towards him being able to keep the same customers for well over 20 years.

In addition to his wife, Shirley, he is survived by their children, Leonard P. Weaver, Jr. of Bellefonte, Chris Weaver of Pocono, Pennsylvania, and Shawn P. Weaver (Shawna) of Bellefonte; and three grandchildren, Nolan J. Weaver, Noah P. Weaver, and Nash F. Weaver, all of Bellefonte.

Along with his parents, he was predeceased by a son, Joseph J.R. Weaver, and his six siblings. Leonard was the youngest and last of his generation.

Woody was a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Bellefonte. He enjoyed gardening, and wood working, and could often be found in his basement/garage, where he would spend hours fabricating all sorts of interesting gadgets and various small projects. A true American Patriot, he loved the USMC and was very proud of his service. He enjoyed many evenings watching FOX News and keeping up to date with the latest goings on in the country. Woody was not often seen without his special sidekick, Gracie, often taking her to work with him. He had a hard outer shell, a soft soul, and a hilariously dry sense of humor, with which he thoroughly enjoyed teasing and sharing his unsolicited “expert” advice to those closest to him. Throughout his life, he did a number of things that he enjoyed and that made him happy, but nothing came close to the immense sense of pride that he felt for his grandchildren, and the cherished time that he spent with them.

Funeral services and burial will be private at the convenience of the family. Arrangements are under the direction of Wetzler Funeral Service, Inc. in Bellefonte.
