Louise Ann (Richards) Hendershot, of Bellefonte, PA, beloved mother, grandmother, and great grandmother passed away peacefully at Centre Crest Nursing Home, Bellefonte, on December 10, 2020 from complications of COVID-19. We’ll forever treasure the many, many wonderful memories we have of her and know she’s now at peace and pain free in a beautiful place with her loved ones.

She was born September 26, 1926 in Bellefonte, a daughter of the late Samuel C. and Carrie E. Hazel Richards. She graduated from Bellefonte High School in 1945. After graduation, she worked at Titan Metal Products of Bellefonte in the Trimming Department, where she gave up her job to a returning soldier from World War II. She also worked at Parrish Drug Store in Bellefonte. On June 25, 1949, she married the late Fred C. Hendershot who passed away December 19, 1994. In 1957, during the Korean War, she and her husband were members of the United States Air Force. Air Defense Command, Ground Observer Corps, as plane spotters for the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. She was a member of St. John’s United Church of Christ in Bellefonte.

She is survived by two daughters: Carol Hendershot, wife of Edward Evock, of Bellefonte; Barbara Vanderstappen, wife of Peter, of Lebanon, PA; two grandchildren: Erika Friddle, wife of Christopher, of Andrews, TX, and Ty Vanderstappen of Middletown, NY; and also, a great grandson, Wyatt Friddle of Andrews, TX. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews, who fondly called her “Aunt Weesie.” Along with her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by brothers: William, John (Jack), Malcolm (Mick), Donald, James and sisters: Shirley, Betty, Jean, and Nell, as well as two infant sons, Thomas and Fred, Jr., and one infant daughter, Susan.

“Mamie” had an incredible memory and loved to spend time telling us stories about her childhood and growing up in Prossertown. She especially enjoyed playing board and card games with all of us. At Centre Crest, she loved participating in bingo and ceramics and enjoyed their musical entertainment.

Funeral services and burial will be private. Arrangements are under the direction of Wetzler Funeral Service, Inc. in Bellefonte. Interment will be at the Lutheran Cemetery, Pleasant Gap.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Centre Crest Auxiliary, 502 East Howard Street, Bellefonte, PA 16823.

Special thanks to the staff of Centre Crest for the excellent care you gave Mom. She loved you all and so do we!

While in Centre Crest for the past 2 ½ years, she would often tell us she was working on a poem. She started out writing the verses but as her hands got worse, she could barely write. Mom kept it in her head and would often tell me the newest verse she added. She started to get sick on the 3rd but felt strong enough the next day to tell me the words as I typed them. Mom actually hated water, and especially the ocean. She always said she felt as if it would smother her. She didn’t even like swimming pools. That her song was about the sea surprised us all. It’s so bittersweet, and we think she knew her time was nearing the end. A dear friend of my sister put her words to music and we now know it was meant to be a song. We’d like to share it with you all.

“Down by The Sea”
by Louise Ann Hendershot
December 4, 2020

Over the river and down by the sea
That’s where my darling is waiting for me
Bells will be ringing a sweet melody
Just over the river and down by the sea

Soon we will marry my darling and me
We will live down by the sea
There we will be as happy can be
Me and my darling down by the sea

Now there are little ones, one, two, three
Two boys for him and a girl for me
We’ll all live together one big family
Over the river and down by the sea

Now they are grown and have lives of their own
They will depart for places unknown
But as for me, my darling and me
We will continue to live down by the sea

Now my darling has passed away
He will be buried down by the sea
Now my time has come at last
I will be buried down by the sea

When you go walking along the shore
Two while crosses you’ll see standing there
One for my darling, and one for me
Forever together down by the sea
