Obituary for Margaret "Marge" Condon Hannan

Margaret “Marge” Condon Hannan, 98, of State College, PA passed away on Friday, December 30, 2022. Born on March 25, 1924, in Paterson, New Jersey, she was the daughter of the late Charlie and Agnes Condon. On April 13, 1944, she married her high school sweetheart, Joseph F. Hannan, who preceded her in death on January 7, 2008, after over 60 years of marriage.

Marge graduated from St. John’s High School in Paterson in 1941. After having five children, she enrolled in William Paterson College where she graduated in 1969 with a BA in Education and a Library Science minor. She went on to earn her master’s in Education with a concentration in TV and radio.

Certified in school and public libraries, she was the founding librarian of Wanaque NJ Public Library, opening in a storefront in 1968 and overseeing the move once the building was finished. She left there in 1970 to found the Lakeside School Library in her home town of Pompton Lakes, NJ. In 1971, she transferred to the high school as Head Librarian for the district. During her tenure, she was Editor of the Commentary for the Board of Ed. She retired from there in 1989.

But Marge was far from done, starting a library at St. Mary’s Church in Pompton Lakes and continuing her work with the PL Historic Preservation Commission of which she was a founding member. She was a long-time parishioner of St. Mary’s and an alto in the adult choir. She was a member of NEA, NJEA, and a volunteer at Chilton Memorial Hospital. She and her husband traveled extensively, and Marge continued to travel after his death.

She is survived by her children, Joseph Hannan (Grace), Frank Hannan (Barbara), Kathleen Craig, and Eileen Melia (Bill), sister-in-law, Loretta Condon, seven grandchildren and five great grandsons; as well as many nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband and parents, Marge was predeceased by her son, Matthew, her siblings: Agnes Dock, Marie Dennehy, Dorothy Klementowski, and Charles Condon.

Marge loved her family, music, reading, laughing and chocolate—not always in that order.

A private family service was held under the direction of Wetzler Funeral Service, Inc. in Bellefonte. A public viewing will be held on Thursday, January 5, 2023, from 9:30 – 10:30 AM, at M. John Scanlan Funeral Home, 781 Newark Pompton Turnpike, Pompton Plains, NJ. Funeral Mass will begin at 11 AM, at St. Mary’s RC Church, 17 Pompton Avenue, Pompton Lakes, NJ.
