Obituary for Mary Jane Crain

Mary Jane Crain, 90, of Port Matilda, passed away at home on Friday, December 18, 2020. Born on August 7, 1930 in Altoona, she was the daughter of the late William M. and Bertha (Hunter) Wagner. In 1953 at the First Presbyterian Church in Altoona, she married her beloved husband, Theodore Scott Crain, Sr., who preceded her in death in 1982, after sharing nearly 30 years of marriage together.

Mary was a 1948 graduate of Altoona High School. She eventually took over the family business, Crain Lumber, and remained the owner/operator until it closed in 2010.

She is survived by her three children, T. Scott Crain, Jr. (Brenda), Jeanne Woodring (Jack), all of Port Matilda, and Julie Miller (Sean) of State College; seven grandchildren, Jaci Johnson, Ted Woodring, Jarrod Woodring, Mary Jane Tetzlaff, Nicole Tetzlaff, Elyse Crain, and Whitney Crain, and four great grandchildren, Gavin, Owen, Mason, and Kellan.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by four brothers, Bill Wagner, Fred Wagner, Zane Wagner, and Dick Wagner, and one sister, Suzanne Sherman; she was the last of her generation.

Mary was a member of Port Matilda United Methodist Church, where she was a Youth Sunday School Teacher. She remained active in her community throughout her years, as a life member of the Port Matilda Fire Company, serving on the Board at People’s Bank of Port Matilda, playing an active roll with the Port Matilda Lions Club and Port Matilda UM Women’s Society, and was the first female member of the Port Matilda Borough Council.

She was an avid BINGO player, traveling various places to play, including Tyrone and State College. She loved to gamble, doing so up until she was 89 years old! She and her grandson, Jarrod, who affectionately referred to her as “Grambo” shared many casino trips. She loved to travel, and especially enjoyed the bus trips that she took to Atlantic City and Seneca.

Funeral services and burial will be private at the convenience of the family. Arrangements are under the direction of Wetzler Funeral Service, Inc. in Bellefonte.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Mary’s memory to the Port Matilda EMS at 402 South High Street, Port Matilda 16870.
