Obituary for Philip H. Sieg
Philip H. Sieg passed away Monday, January 25, 2021, at Mount Nittany Medical Center. He was born in Bellefonte, Pennsylvania, on July 4, 1935, the son of Louise Bloom Sieg and William Philip Sieg.
Phil graduated in 1953 from Bellefonte High School, where he was a proud member of the wrestling team coached by Glen Smith, and from The Pennsylvania State University in 1957. Phil was a proud Penn State alumnus, supporting many programs of interest, such as the Schreyer Honors College, the University Libraries, and teaching fellowships in the Business School. Throughout his life, Phil loved to watch Nittany Lion football teams. Penn State named Phil an Alumni Fellow in 1988 and a Distinguished Alumnus (its highest honor) in 1993.
Phil met the love of his life, Judith O’Donnell Sieg, in Bellefonte. They married on April 11, 1959, and enjoyed 54 wonderful years together. Judy died seven years ago, and Phil missed her every day. Together, they raised three sons and were proud to cheer them on as they grew up, competed in athletics, had families of their own, and built successful careers in financial services.
A creative and successful businessman, Phil was a real estate developer who enjoyed having an idea and working hard to see his vision through to completion. In 1959, Phil and a partner formed the Federated Home & Mortgage Co. to build single-family homes and apartment complexes in State College. The firm soon developed and managed a chain of 20 Holiday Inns in Pennsylvania and three other states. Over the years, Phil’s favorite real estate project was Toftrees, the first planned community in Pennsylvania, which combined two of his passions, real estate and golf. Phil was an avid golfer who traveled the United States, Scotland, and Ireland, playing new courses and revisiting old favorites. He and his sons made a good foursome.
Phil also enjoyed walking on the beach and watching sunsets in Florida, reading, movies, long conversations, spending time with his grandchildren, and being with dogs. Phil and Judy had a wonderful circle of friends and loved to entertain them with parties at their home; their annual Christmas party was a highlight of the holiday season.
He is survived by his three sons, daughters-in-law, and eleven grandchildren: Phil and Janice (Caitlin, Ben, Bo, and Caroline) of Short Hills, NJ; Andy and Heliane (Madison, Jack, and Anna) of Greenwich, CT; and Doug and Tracey (Taylor, Ashley, Abbey, and Cameron) of Summit, NJ.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, there will be a small private service; however, family and friends will gather together for a celebration of a life well-lived when it is safe to do so. Arrangements are under the direction of Wetzler Funeral Service, Inc. in Bellefonte.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Bellefonte Art Museum, 133 North Allegheny Street, Bellefonte, Pa. 16823.
