Obituary for Robert M. Rugh

Robert M. Rugh, 62, of Bellefonte, passed away on Friday, August 11, 2023, at Mount Nittany Medical Center in State College. Born on October 8, 1960, in Oil City, Pennsylvania, he was the son of the late Robert W. and Kathryn R. (Winwood) Rugh.

Robert was a 1979 graduate of Keystone High School in Knox, PA. Directly after high school, he proudly served his country in the United States Navy from 1979 until he was honorably discharged in 1985. During his time in the service, he was awarded the Navy Expeditionary Medal, Humanitarian Service Medal, and the Good Conduct Award. Upon returning home, he attended courses at Penn Tech in Williamsport, where he graduated from with his Associates of Culinary Arts. Robert was a true “Jack of all trades,” and was currently still working at the YMCA, where he had been employed for over 20 years.

He is survived by his siblings, Jeffrey L. Rugh (Cara) of Kane, PA, Steve D. Rugh of York, PA, and Janice L. Rhoades (Cris) of Selinsgrove, PA.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his beloved cat, Bennie.

Robert attended St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Bellefonte. A resident of Bellefonte, he truly loved it here and always said this was his home. Throughout his life, Rob enjoyed fitness, especially walking, swimming, and jogging. He loved to cook. An avid animal lover, loyal friend, and caring brother, he will be remembered by his quirky sense of humor, and friendly smile. He never really met a stranger; during his walks around the town, he would always stop and start a friendly chat with the people that he’d see out. Additionally, throughout the years, he forged many friendships with our local law enforcement officers and would always offer a kind word of support when he’d see them during his walks. Robert was always interested in history and liked reading books about the Civil War.

A Celebration of Life service will be held in Bellefonte. Details will be announced at a later date. Arrangements are under the direction of Wetzler Funeral Service, Inc. in Bellefonte.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in memory of Robert to Pets Come First, 2451 General Potter Highway, Centre Hall, PA 16828.
