Susan K. Rio Carson, 67, of Bellefonte, passed away on Tuesday, July 5, 2022, at Mount Nittany Medical Center in State College. Born on March 29, 1955, in Bellefonte, she was the daughter of the late Joseph D. and Mary C. (Luchuck) Rio. On May 6, 2006, she married her beloved husband, Charles V. Carson, who survives her at home after sharing 16 years of marriage.

Susan was a 1973 graduate of Bellefonte High School. Later, she graduated from Penn State with her bachelor’s degree in Rehabilitation Education. Over the years, she held various positions within her career field. She first worked as an Intensive Case Manager for Centre County for Mental Health, then worked for Counseling Service, Inc. for the mentally ill, and then as a Community Educator. She went on to teach middle school at Our Lady of Victory in State College for 5 years, before taking a position as a Mobile Therapist for Skills in State College.

In addition to her husband, Charles, she is survived by a stepson, Sean Carson, of Washington D.C., her sister, Patricia R. Whitaker (Michael) of Hudson, Ohio, nephew, Erik Whitaker of Corning, New York, and niece, Kristen Cooper of Kent, Ohio, and great nieces and nephews: Kasey and Kyle Cooper, and Rio and Vivian Whitaker.

Along with her parents, she was predeceased by a son, Matthew Joseph Hazel, on August 27, 2002.

Susan was a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Bellefonte. Additionally, she was a member of the Kappa Delta at Penn State. She was an avid sports fan, and loved watching the New York Mets, Buffalo Bills, and Penn State sports – especially wrestling. She enjoyed reading, and traveling to Pemaquid, Maine to visit Charles’ family. She also adored her Golden Retrievers; Quincy was her most recent canine companion, who passed away in 2021.

A Funeral Mass will be held on Saturday, August 20, 2022, at 10:00 A.M., at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, 134 E. Bishop Street, Bellefonte, with Father Brian Saylor officiating. Burial will be private at the convenience of the family. Arrangements are under the direction of Wetzler Funeral Service, Inc. in Bellefonte.
