Obituary for Vera S. Sampsell

Vera S. Sampsell, 97, of Bellefonte, passed away on Thursday, May 18, 2023, at Centre Care. Born on February 5, 1926, in Renovo, she was the daughter of the late Leo D. and Alice G. (Knepley) Sholl. On February 8, 1947, she married her beloved husband, Richard R. Sampsell, who preceded her in death on November 23, 2017, after sharing 70 years of marriage together.

Vera was a graduate of Bellefonte High School. She worked as a secretary for Community Action in Bellefonte before becoming a coordinator. She remained there until her retirement.

She is survived by her one son, Richard K. Sampsell, of Pleasant Gap, two granddaughters, Chelsea Fletcher (Eric), and Stephanie Moyle (Arthur), and three great grandchildren, Evan, Savannah, and Quinn.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was predeceased by one brother, Leo Sholl, Jr., and her sisters, Helen Brown, and Alice Dugan.

Vera was a member of the Pleasant Gap United Methodist Church. While being a stay-at-home mother, she served as The Welcome Wagon Hostess in the Bellefonte community. It brought her so much joy to be able to welcome new residents to the area and to make sure that they knew they would always have a friend that could be called upon. Later in life, she and her husband, Richard, moved to Florida, where they lived for over 14 years. More than anything, she loved her family and looked forward to the times that she was able to spend with them. A loving wife, devoted mother, and adoring grandmother, she leaves her loved ones with numerous memories that they will forever cherish.

A public viewing will be held on Wednesday, May 24, 2023, from 10-11:00 AM, at Wetzler Funeral Service, Inc., 206 N. Spring Street, Bellefonte. Funeral services will begin at 11:00 AM, at the funeral home, with Pastor Bob Dornan officiating. A graveside service will immediately follow in Zion Cemetery.
