Obituary

Robert “Bob” Alexander Schaeffer, 96, of Bellefonte, passed away peacefully at home on Friday, April 23, 2021. Born on January 11, 1925 in Bellefonte, he was the son of the late Charles and Margaret (Rowan) Schaeffer. On September 5, 1947, he married Jane Louise (Montoro) Schaeffer, who preceded him in death on September 29, 2006, after sharing over 59 years of marriage together.

Bob was a 1947 graduate of Bellefonte High School, after returning from WWII, which he entered in 1942. He served for four years while being stationed in Key West Naval Station and British Guiana. He returned from the service to work for his father at Schaeffer’s Hardware, where he continued to work for 50 years and managed the hardware store until his retirement. Bob cherished his years at the store, his regular clients, and the many dedicated employees throughout the years.

He is survived by two daughters, Margaret S. Miller (the late Edwin B. Miller) of Haverford, PA, and Carol S. Kelly (Richard Kelly) of Cleveland, and beloved grandchildren, Lauren Elizabeth Kelly, and Stephen Alexander Kelly of Cleveland.

Bob was a member of the St. John’s Lutheran Church in Bellefonte. He was an active civic servant and loved his hometown of Bellefonte. He was a Charter Member of the Bellefonte Lions Club since 1949, with over 72 years of service. Recently, he was awarded the Melvin Jones Fellowship Award, the highest form of recognition of service within the Lions Club. Additionally, he was a member of the Logan Fire Company, Centre County Shrine Club, Jaffa Shrine of Altoona, Bellefonte Elks Lodge #1094, VFW Post #1600 in Bellefonte, Bellefonte Chamber of Commerce, American Philatelic Society, and the Nittany Country Club. Throughout his earlier years and into retirement, he was an avid golfer, bowler, gardener, stamp collector, musician – playing the banjo, accordion, piano, and bugle for the Navy. After retirement, Bob volunteered countless hours to the Lions Club fundraisers, visiting guests at Centre Crest, and numerous church activities.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, May 8, 2021, at 10am, at St. John’s Lutheran Church, 216 McAllister Street, Bellefonte, with Pastor Will Osman officiating. I'm sad to hear about Mr. Schaeffer's passing. I visited Schaeffer Hardware more than once, even though, as a student, I didn't have many hardware needs. I can picture him, and I remember him as being soft-spoken and helpful. I might have even visited his house in Bellefonte. I'm sure he contributed much to the community. --Thaddeus Rutkowski

Carol/Peggy, your dad was a joy to spend time with whether sitting on his front porch shooting the breeze or at Maria's having a meal and him having his signature glass of red wine. I can't forget to mention the desperate phone call's from him to get his TV working again. I'll surely miss Robert.

Dear Peggy,
I thought so much of your father. He was a wonderful person. I shall treasure my memories of being able to go into the hardware and buy ten cents worth of this seed, ten cents worth of that, etc. Plus my husband and I rented a rototiller from him for about ten years. When he was closing the business, he gave us a good deal on buying it, because he said we were about the only renters. He had only kind words for me when my husband passed in 2003. Just last summer I saw him walking by the DeLottos" house on Beaver Street. I was pleasantly surprised when he immediately knew me. You have my sympathy for your loss. I'm sure God would say of Bob, "Well done, my Son". Blessings to you, Genevieve Robine

Carol and Peggy, i was sad to hear that your Dad had passed away. Many times in the past few years, I would be in Bellefonte for a class reunion or party and we would run into him at a restaurant. I know that you will miss having your Dad in your lives for a long time, but as Lisa and I say, they are still with us in memory and sometimes just tell us little tidbits accidently. May he rest in peace finally and he is reunited with your Mom and they can continue watching over you. Prayers and sympathies from Larry and I.

Mr. Schaeffer always had so many great stories to tell. I will miss seeing him on his front porch giving my family waives when we drive by. Always smiling. Rest in peace Bob. You'll surely be missed by many.
